Hi

I am not sure that this is the correct place to ask this question. I used a friend’s Laptop to start to develop a Site, which included .asp pages. I installed and setup IIS and everything worked okay.

I have now set everything up on another Laptop and have the following problem. When I publish the Website, I get an error to say that Windows Sharepoint or Frontpage Server Extensions are not installed on the Server.

I am using IIS Version 5.1, Windows XP SP2 and FP 2003. In FP2003, in the Remote Web Site Properties, I have selected FrontPage or Sharepoint and entered http://localhost in the Remote Server location.

The only difference between the first laptop and this one is that I cannot say if SP2 was installed.

the error tells you what is going on
"frontpage extensions are not installed"

You also may have an issue specifying "localhost" as that isnt going to work because the computer you are on is the localhost as well. You can't call the the other computer that way.

regardless, don't use publish.  it is a lame troublesome feature that causes more problems than it is worth especially when dealing with asp and database driven projects.

copy your files to the new site/computer manually.. using the file explorer, over the network, ftp... whatever

Thanks for your reply. Everything worked on the first Laptop. When I enter http://localhost in IE, I see the default page. I belive this means that IIS is working okay.

I am currently developing this site away from home, so I do not have another computer.

I have checked out many things on the MS website, but everything I have seen, just skirts around this problem, but doesn' tell you how to fix it.

I thought you said you had two laptops.. ?

What are you doing then ? Are you trying to publish a web site on your laptop to a hosted commerical website ?

Not all commercial web sites are going to have frontpage extensions installed and if you get an error like that it means exactly what it says.
I don't see what the big mystery is.

confusing story. I will eventually publish this application on a commercial website. I started to develop this website on one laptop and used IIS to test it locally using http://localhost. I then had to give back Laptop and so re-created everyone on the second Laptop. I still at this stage, intend to test the website on the local machine, using IIS.

As I bought FP from a reseller, I get two free calls to Microsoft. I spoke to them last night, and their helpdesk is thinking about the problem. The problem may be that I just copied the web .html and .asp files using a explorer and not all the system folders are in place.

When/if I get an answer, I will let you know.

Problem solved.

There were two problems. The first was that I have just copied the .asp and .html files from the other Laptop, which has also a different computer name.

The second problem was that the setting up of IIS did not work properly. In IIS, most of the system folders for the default web site folder, where missing, namely _vti_bin.

The guy from Microsoft was very helpful in checking all the IIS settings and explaining what they did.

End result is that I can once again, publish .asp pages to my own local system.

I am expecting a detailed e-mail from Microsoft, so if anyone else needs some info, please let me know.
